A Putter Fitting = Your Best Investment For Lower Scores!
When Keith Chatham – AGCP Master Clubfitter – speaks, I always listen. Even so I was initially surprised about a week ago when, on the AGCP Forum, he said that the first fitting a golfer should have is for his putter.
But the more I thought about his statement, the more I know he is correct. The golf club sales world, however, is not likely to be pushing putter sales above driver and iron sales in the near future.
The facts are pretty clear. First, more than 40% of all golf strokes in a round are with a putter. Second, the putting stroke is the one stroke that any golfer – with the right instruction – can perform as well or better than a PGA Pro. Third, great putting can help a golfer to recover from missed drives, iron shots, and wedge shots – and so create confidence during a round of golf.
Why then, do many club fitter I talk with say that they do not do a lot of putter fittings? Most likely it is a carry over from the present "10 more yards" environment in the golf advertising world. Golfers are more likely to be swayed into thinking they can get 10 or more yards with the latest driver or iron technology. It is not as easy to sell the fact that – if you buy a putter that is well fit for you – you most likely will not need to buy another putter in the future.
As with many things in the world, the truth is not always the obvious. In this case the truth is – be fit for a putter FIRST!
A Happy and Wonderful Thanksgiving to all of you.
