The Right Wedge Bounce – AND Good Wedge Technique – Produce Confident Wedge Play!

Making Bounce Work

Many of you have seen this picture before.  It shows the wedge wear pattern for a golfer playing with a wedge that is not suited for his game.  In the past, I have discussed the need for most golfers to play with more wedge bounce than they presently use – particularly in their lob wedges.

Lately I have been working on improving my wedge play – chipping, short pitches, and sand shots.  There are a lot of great videos on the web that can be watched to see good models for improving your technique.  Here are links to three very good ones that I watched over the weekend:

Luke Donald – Front Edge Pitch

     Paul Azinger – Using Bounce

Fred Griffin – Bounce Your Chips

There is one thing I found that was consistent in all of these videos – ALL of the shots created very small, if any, divots.  These guys do not have a lot of forward shaft lean at impact.  Also, I believe that they did not have a lot of downward angle of attack at impact in their short wedge swings.

So play your short-game shots with the right tools – in particular, with wedges that have the right bounce for your game.  But also realize that improving your wedge technique can make your short-game play even better.
