Today a phrase in the audio book I have been reading jumped out at me – "Good is often the enemy of Great." This past weekend at Game Improvement Golf, we had another opportunity to create GREAT golf clubs, not clubs like you would get "off the rack" at a golf store when you might get fit from a fitting cart.
We had built two test clubs for a client after the initial fitting. We knew he needs shorter clubs than standard, got a good idea of club flex from his swing speed and his downswing time – but were not quite sure what the best overall weighting – club MOI – should be for his irons. The client also – because we took high speed video of his swing and showed him some things he could do differently – had made some swing changes since the initial fitting.
So we tested by adding 2 grams of weight at a time to the test 5 and 9 irons. We added 2 grams, then 4 grams, then 6. The distance results he achieve with 4 grams of added weight were better than for other weights and he liked the feel of the clubs with 4 grams added. So then we made a slight "tweek" around 4 grams – tested with 3 then 5 grams added weight to the clubhead. When he hit the 5 iron with 5 grams added weight he got 20 MORE YARDS OF DISTANCE from his 5 iron, smaller dispersion of shot results, good feel – and also hit the 9 iron very well.
When this happens it is GREAT FUN because we know we have really helped a golfer get the most he can of the clubs being built for him. And we know when we build the final set of clubs, we can exactly match the club MOI and shaft flex of the test club.
So the question is – when you go to a store to get fit from a Fitting Cart – are the Good results you might get Great? – and can you ensure that the clubs that you buy based on the Fitting Cart fitting the specs of the club that you got your best results with in the store? What do you deserve from a Fitting and from the golf clubs you buy – Good, or GREAT? You get to choose!
The Fit Is IT!!
