Golf Club Specifications Matter To Help Golfers Score Well!
A few weeks ago Roy Nix – the President of the Association of Golf Clubfitting Professionals (AGCP) – made a statement in a LinkedIn post that has stuck in my mind. This statement was (probably paraphrasing a little!)……
"Off the rack golf clubs have specifications that are close but not precise, custom club fitters build golf clubs that have specifications that are precise not close."
During the last week or so, here are a number of "Close But Not Precise" golf club specifications that I have run into that can affect how golfers score but also how they can enjoy their games:
1. A golfer showed me his present gap wedge – one that he practices with a lot and one that has not been easy for him to hit. It actually had Negative Bounce – so when he would impact the ground it would dig into the ground rather than bouncing off of the turf as a good wedge design should. Pretty hard to overcome that poor club design!
2. An excellent junior golfer – about to go to school on a golf scholarship – did a putter fitting with me. I looked at his present putter, made be a well know putter company – and the grip was not on straight. The flat side of the grip was set up so that he would set the putter face closed to his aim line – unless he adjusted. Small thing?
3. We recently started rebuilding a set of OEM irons with Aerotech i80 S flex shafts. To do so, have to pull the heads from the present irons. The 4 iron was supposed to be 38-7/8 inches long, it was 39-3/8 inches long. Other irons in the original set were also not at the specifications expected. The question is why? – but at least in this case after the clubs are rebuilt they will have consistent lengths, club MOI weights, and club flexes.
If you want to play your BEST golf, you deserve to play with golf clubs that are in fact Precise Not Close to the specifications that can help you do so!
If you know of any of your golf club specs that have influenced your ability to play well, please comment.
