The friendships we develop playing golf together can be as important as the scores we shoot!

Golf Buddies 2013.1!!

For each of the past 6 years or so, a group of about 16 of us goes each spring to play golf in Georgia and Ocala, Florida for about 6 days.  For me this is special each time, but maybe more special this year because until a few days ago I was not sure I could do this.

I have had a condition called "frozen shoulder" in both of my shoulders, and it has kept me from playing golf for over a month, kept me from sleeping through the night for much of this time, simply drained my energy and enthusiasm during this time.  But the toughest part during this time was thinking I could not get away with "my old little boy friends" and get to play and eat and laugh and tell stories and just enjoy being with each other.

Tomorrow – one day before we leave – I will hit a few golf balls to see how things feel.  My shoulders are considerable better but not there yet.  But good enough to go, and that is good enough.  Great physical therapy (Knoxville Healthsource), massage (Rhama Knoxville), and care from my family physician David Seay have really helped.

All of this makes me really appreciate the friends I have, the fact that they have been pulling for me to be able to go on the trip, and the joy of being able to do so.

The week will in fact be an experiment if I can stick to the plan.  No concerns about scores, swing easy, take what comes, enjoy it for the sheer enjoyment of playing and being with friends.  Maybe, who knows, that is what it should always be about anyhow!  I will let you know what happens next week!!
