Emphasizing the Putting Triad – Aim, Speed, and Path!
Today I was fortunate to be able to attend the Edel Golf Puttter Fitting Training session. Bobby Dean, VP of Operations for Edel, trained me on using the putter fitting system in Oak Ridge last March. But it was a real treat to go through the training again not only with Bobby but with David Edel, the inventor of the putter fitting system.
The main focus of the training was on what they call the Putting Triad – Aim, Speed, and Path. I have always realized how important it is to be able to play with a putter that you can aim properly – and there was a lot of emphasis on this part of putter fitting in the training. However, I now have a much stronger appreciation for how important fitting for Speed Control is. A number of the attendees agreed that fitting for speed control is the real "secret sauce" of putter fitting.
Anyone who knows about or have seen an Edel putter fitting knows that one of the fitting elements is to control the speed of putts to a specific distance – say 12 to 15 feet. One of my big takeaways from today it to put an increased emphasis on testing for speed control in my putter fittings. But ALSO to suggest to all of the golfers I work with that a way for them to practice is to work on improving speed control on the practice green. Set up a 15 foot putt to a string, work on getting better at landing all of your putts right on that string. You might find out that this is difficult to do – which might suggest that the weighting of your putter is not right for you. And if you can control speed, you will get increased confidence that you can take onto the golf course.
Edel Wedge Fitting Tomorrow. And as an Added Bonus! – I found out I can sign up to take an AimPoint Fundamentals Class with Mark Sweeney – the inventor of the AimPoint green reading system – on Wednesday. Should be informative!
The Fit Is IT!!
