To improve feel, practice your putting stroke without your putter and with your eyes closed!
This morning I was working on writing a new draft of my coming eBook on Putting Improvement Tasks. Almost every day, I spend a few minutes practicing my putting stroke. I went over to the mirror I have in my basement – but for some reason decided to practice some strokes without my putter.
When I looked into the mirror, I was surprised at how good my shoulder setup was; I often struggle with getting my shoulders square at address. Hum. Then I closed my eyes and practiced a few strokes. Again surprise – it was very easy for me to feel using my shoulders to control my stroke.
Why did my stroke feel so free, natural, and correct? Maybe it was the result of not "constraining" myself by having the putter in my hands. Whatever the cause, I loved the feel of practicing my stroke this way. And when I picked up my putter and then did some more strokes, they also seemed more free, natural, and correct.
So I plan to add some "no putter, eyes closed" putting practice to my daily efforts to become a great putter. Give it a try yourself – you might be surprised at the results. And feel free to comment if you have had any similar experiences in your putting practice.
