This morning I received one of those notes that clubfitters just love to get. A month or so ago I reshafted a driver for a female golfer, and she sent me the following message today…..
Tony,
I am your greatest advocate. I just shot a 79 yesterday!! My lowest round ever. The key – my tee shots!! Thanks again for providing me with my driver. It is a pleasure to use.
What a great accomplishment for her. I have no illusions that it was just the driver that lead to this great score (gotta have a good short game and putt well….) but clearly her confidence with her driver was a big part of her success.
It is I think valuable to review what I was able to do to optimize her driver……
1. She was playing a 46-1/2 inch driver and we determined she really needed a 43-1/2 inch driver. 3 Inches Shorter!!
2. So I cut down her driver by 3 inches, and then worked with her to find the Proper Weighting for the shorter club – this resulted in finding a new driver MOI to build the revised club to.
3. Finally, I purchased a shaft that had a flex profile that fit her swing speed and swing characteristics, and rebuilt the driver with this shaft and to the proper length and MOI for her swing.
She hits this driver longer, straighter, and with much more confidence than in the past. I guess:
Shorter is Longer is Lower (like 79!!)
The Fit Is IT!!
